The council of Somiedo is located in the southwest of Asturias. With almost 30,000 hectares he is one of the most representative spaces of the mountain ecosystems of the north of the Iberian Peninsula. It is Natural Park, in his totality, from 1988 and Reserve of the Biosphere from year 2000. Its rustic landscapes,

long ago modeled by the action of the ice and today covered by a vegetal mosaic in which they predominate the forests with it has and of oak, they lodge one of the more important populations of brown bear of western Europe, in addition to an ample variety of species animals and own vegetables of Cantabrian mountains.

The characteristics of the climate and the ground both allow the existence in Somiedo of more representative types of forest of the Cantabrian mountain, both of leaf expires: the hayedo and the robledal.

The formation herbaceous the cattle activity of the zone also reaches considerable extensions demonstrating clearly. In the bottoms of valleys the meadows destined to production of dry grass predominate and as it is increased the altitude are the meadows destined to the summer pasturing. The landscaping and vegetal diversity has made of Somiedo a place of ideal refuge for diverse animal species that in other times lived in ampler zones of Asturias and the Iberian Peninsula.

The Natural Park of Somiedo has conserved to the present time one of the most complete representations of the faunística community of Atlantic Iberia.

Ten species of amphibians, equal number of reptiles, a hundred of birds and about forty mammals as well as at least four species of fish, constitute the somedana vertebrate fauna. Most of the visitors it will not manage to see none of the species of great noncinegetic vertebrates. Certainly otters, real, urogallos eagles, bears, wolves… live in Somiedo, but it is not necessary to forget that it is animals whose survival depends largely on its ability to hide itself.
